SMACC is concerned with many issues facing our earth. One of those issues is waste. The U.S. generates about three billion tons of food waste per year and wastes about the same amount of single-use plastic. The project we are currently working on is going to local businesses and rating them on how much waste they generate. We look for things like composting food waste, recycling, plastic bags, straws, and more. We rate them on a rubric and write a report. Then we reach out to them and work with them to reduce their waste. Before we started the project, we went to a local bakery called MarieBette to see what doing things right looks like. To learn more about what we look for, go to that review.
